The Riviera International Centre Torquay

The Riviera International Conference Centre is Torquay’s purpose built conference and exhibition complex, and has become a true success story, both in terms of the facilities and service it provides to both the local community and its conference and events clients.

On the day of the “Battle of the Choirs” and in the evening the main forum will be set out with table and chairs for all, creating a comfortable, friendly and relaxed atmosphere.
 
 
Majestic Male Voice Choir Festival Due to the overwhelming interest since our inaugural Choir Festival in 2008, we are pleased to present
“Battle Of The Male Voice Choirs”
to be held the weekend of
Friday 2nd March 2012.
 
Each choir will perform a programme chosen by themsleves. Performances should last between 15 & 20 minutes. There will be an additional ten minutes allowed per choir for change over making each performance slot 30 minutes long.
 
The Judging Panel
Unlike previous years,the 2012 competition will be judged solely by a panel chaired by renowned adjudicator Mr Peter Davies.
Judging will be based on:-
• Appearance • Performance
• Technical Ability & Audience Communication
• Return Coach Travel • 2 Nights Dinner, Bed & Breakfast • Selected Torquay Hotels
• Competition Entry into The Festival • Entertainment in Hotel Friday Night & at the
Riviera Centre on Saturday Night
 
• Born and brought up in the Swansea Valley
• Trained as a teacher at Christ Church University College
• A College OrganScholar
• Studied choral directing through the Assc of British Choral Directors for over 20yrs
• Directed mixed, youth and church choirs for over 30 years
• Directed multi award winning Huntingdon Male Voice Choir for over 16 years
• Conducted massed choir events in Peterborough and Ely cathedrals
• Undertakes workshops with choirs and choral conductors across the country
• Festival Director of Cornwall International Male Voice Choral Festival
• Adjudicates choral competitions nationally and internationally
• Researches and contributes to professional journals on choral singing matters.

 
Eligibility to compete
1. All members of a choir, except the conductor and accompanist, must be amateurs (i.e. people who do not earn their livelihood as singers).
2. No person may compete as a member of more than one choir.
3. The programme must be entertaining & melodious
4. The allocated time for each choir should not exceed 20 minutes of singing time! Choirs exceeding the 20 minutes will be penalised by the adjudicator.
5. The adjudicators will allocate marks not only for performance quality, but also for the aesthetic quality of the pieces chosen and the variety in their musical styles as well as overall entertainment value.
6. Submitted pieces should be forwarded to Majestic before January 20th 2012
7. All choirs participating in the Festival are expected to comply with Majestic terms and conditions of booking. A copy will be forwarded to you with these details.
General
8. Majestic reserves the right to limit the number of entries for this competition.
9. Majestic reserves the right to refuse entries.
10. Adjudicators’ decisions are final and no correspondence will be entered into regarding any aspect of their deliberations.
11. A choir which withdraws will be liable to the normal cancellation fees according to Majestic booking conditions.
12. It is contrary to law to perform music which has been reproduced illegally. Should a choir do so, Majestic accepts no responsibility for any action taken by publishers.
13. Choirs must forward a photograph and short biography (200 words maximum) with their application
14. Participation in the Majestic Festival Competition implies acceptance of all the rules and regulations.
15. In the unlikely evebt that our stated adjudicators are unable to attend the festivals, similar adjudicators will be appointed
